This map shows the protected areas of Belize where the land is managed
and studied to avoid damaging the environment and to improve the sustainability
of natural resources. The government and non-governmental organizations
were chosen because of their great variety of species and their unique
and fragile habitats. Theprotected area system covers almost 45% of Belizean
territory.
Some of the important functions of these protected areas are:
protection of drinking water, shorelines, commercial activities,
and recreation.
